BALD HEAD ISLAND HOUSE PUBLISHED: (link) BHI House HAVEN MAG (link) well it is “only” a local publication, but the folks at Haven do a great job. kudos to Haven for beautiful photos and thoughtful prose.
the creation of this home was truly a collaborative effort. Harper would often show up at the office with a new idea, a book (most often Japanese architecture and gardens), or scale models he had constructed. we’d sit for hours discussing the spaces as I manipulated the virtual model; studying various schemes. the opportunity to work with Harper and Plunkett to realize their dream of creating a tranquil home respectful of all that surrounds it and all that inhabit it was a great pleasure. when i left ILM i knew i was leaving the project in very capable hands. you guys have out done yourselves. congratulations!
its not often that you pick up a call from a supplier, while your still working out a design, and he says “Hey, I’ve got a man in a forest. What size is that beam…” the majority of the timber structure is longleaf pine and was harvested and milled within 100 miles of Bald Head Island. the house also boasts a solar hot water heater and SPF insulation.
thank you Micheal for trusting my judgment with this project. thank you Harper and Plunkett for your courage to see this through, you’ve done an amazing job.
“so well integrated with its environment, it could have grown out of the earth alongside the trees that encircle it.” HAVEN 2010
